NOUNS: People & Place
NOUNS: People & Place
In many households, there is a disconnect between parents and kids. Parents don’t understand their kids and kids don’t understand their parents. Fortunately, families don’t have to stay that way. A tweak here and there can make all the difference. I have witnessed this firsthand.
Patrick came into the ministry and everyone noticed. His exuberance and enthusiasm during worship songs was electrifying. But when the songs ended Patrick didn’t. He continued dancing like the track never stopped. I can relate — I almost always have a song playing in my head. And if you catch me at the right moment, you will see me hit a move or two. Well, eventually, Patrick’s energy dropped a couple of notches. During small group however, he would blurt out answers and have no regard for the leaders. That’s when Patrick was brought to my attention.
I approached him and his body language quickly communicated his disappointment. I knelt to his level, connected and the rest of the story is all up hill from there. Obviously it took some work, but Patrick turned around from that moment. Patrick didn’t need another adult telling him that what he was doing was wrong. Patrick needed a couple of nouns — people who cared and a place to belong. What we did was make those two things happen. We connected with his parents, got on the same page and loved towards Patrick’s transformation — and transform he did. To this day, his parents constantly remind me of how we helped to change Patrick into a different child. We can all see a change in his step and a sparkle in his smile.
‘Tis true that I was born with a gift to connect with kids, but kids are just one side of the family. Parents are the other. To bridge the gap between parents and kids, working with both parents and kids must be a part of the solution. That thought had never crossed my mind. You see, my skills with kids was not enough. Fortunately, several years ago, I was introduced to Orange. Ever since, I have had the privilege of impacting many families and helping ministries do the same.
Whether a parent, ministry or anyone who works with families, I highly recommend you attend the Orange Conference this Spring. Register this Thursday, October 13th for the best rate! I hope to see you there!
